The backend can return a Reel’s source-provided thumbnail when yt-dlp exposes it as a direct image URL on an allowed media host and its file extension is JPG, JPEG, PNG or WebP. This is conditional: a Reel link does not guarantee a cover result.

For a video post, the thumbnail tool filters out the video and returns the source’s thumbnail image only when it meets the same host and image-format checks. It does not download the video file or convert a frame into a cover.

Why a thumbnail may be unavailable
- No source thumbnail was returned
- The extractor can only use thumbnail metadata exposed by Instagram. It cannot create a cover or capture a frame from the video.
- The image host or format is unsupported
- The image must be a direct URL from an allowed media host and use JPG, JPEG, PNG or WebP. Other hosts or formats are filtered out.
- The Reel or post is inaccessible
- Private, removed, sign-in-restricted or temporarily unavailable media may not return metadata or a downloadable image.
- You need the complete video or an original photo
